Narrative Construction as Play.

When first beginning this reading I was prepared to argue and defend the rights of women and how to we enjoy to involve ourselves in video games. Although after continuing the reading I began to change my mind. Narrative and constructive play is the exact way I would explain the differences between the behaviors of girls and boys while playing. I to used the play and embarrassing enough still like the play some of the video games that were mentioned in this reading, or example Sims. This game is base on creating a character, a house, and a community for them, and develop a life for them while playing the game. When watching children play you can see girls creating stories through there dolls and barbies, while boys and building lego and racing cars. I believe when adding a narrative quality behind things you can involve yourself more personally. Such as with the science experiment mentioned at the end of the reading. When giving the children a chance to learn and be tested through a narrative game, it helped them relax and learn more about the topic. This to i find to be true for i myself try to do the same with studying, try to involve myself by relating terms or facts with my own life to help remember. Narrative and interactive play is a very powerful devise as you can see through this reading, that I believe can be used on anyone.

Dark Matter

With in this article Gregory Sholette is continually comparing Dark Matter to the select non-profit, non-famous artist. People who create art, perhaps went to school for it, but in the long run ended up not being appreciated enough for the standards or the art world. Dark Matter makes up the whole atmosphere, or to be precise 96% of it. It controls how the whole world works and revolves. This to can be seen the same for the non-elite creators of our art world. These people create our home-craft, makeshift memorials, internet art galleries, amateur photography. These hidden talents creates and energy that the art world is dependent on. The end difference between the two, is that of who ends up being which artist is highly sought after by a museum or private collector or what critic or curator will soon want to feature her work in a review or exhibition. Gregory Scholette discuses how we must begin to link dark matter to artists who are working outside or against the parameters of the mainstream art world, due to political and social judgment. It brings a whole new level to think about when it comes to art. Not just to consider the mainstream and out there artist, but the oh so real artist that are behind the sense trying to matter a differenced by not conforming. I found this article to be very depressing at a first glance to realize how many artists are not being appreciated to the fullest, due to there style or view point on art it self. Although, now I realize that it is not just about that, but about not conforming to what society is excepting of you.

“To be seen, seeable, embodied, to block something from another’s view, to take as well as give away the very means of seeing, these are the new terms of battle. With it comes a new horizon filled with possibilities as well as risks.”

Trouble at the Interface, or the Identity Crisis of Interactive Art

With people interacting with digital and electronics everyday, there is no reason why we should not bring this into are art, for art is a way to capture the ways and understanding of our times. This reading discussed many topic’s surrounding the problems and concerns of Interactive Arts. Before reading this I too thought that Interactive Arts where mainly about the activeness of the viewer on a piece of electric work. That to have Interactive Art you had to have a piece of work that was created with electronics that the viewer could directly act with, hence why it was call “interactive” art. Although, I have been very mistaken. Even through The term itself is still in discussion of its boundaries and what can actually classify as Interactive art, the art world is beginning to give it more freedom to become what we as artist decide. You can have on one hand the viewer interacting with the art by pedaling through it on a bicycle into a visual world, or you can have a viewer be reading phrases and sentences flashing by them on a screen. Both have the viewer interacting with the piece just on different levels. There can be a more physical can in the first example or more of a emotional or a mental. I do understand the thoughts on people who do not agree with interactive arts not including a physical interactive part to there work. Since in any piece the viewer is seen to be interactive with the art, in trying to understand and in trying to wrap there minds around the concepts of the work. I find the difference here is that with the flashing words and sentences it brings the viewer to engage into the piece and interact by waiting and looking for the words to appear. It also holds that electronic side that a painting or a sculpture would lack. Both sides can be argued, and both can be easily won. Though I find this besides the point. For art is supposed to be discussed in every bad and good sense. It should have many different levels to it, from the start of it as “old school”, to what it has grown today. From it first beginning  with a wooden computers, or cranks and pulleys. It has grow to evolve into what it can be seen as today. It does not matter how much contact the viewer has with the piece or wether the base of the piece is made up entirely of electronics. Interactive Arts just takes those to elements and uses them to create, whatever ratio that might be.
